Natural. Happy. Delicious.

Spectacular Saltbush…

Old Man Saltbush (Atriplex nummularia) is a native Australian species that was common before European settlement. It is an excellent source of food for livestock, being high in protein and minerals. It has been instrumental in helping to ‘drought proof’ the farm, as its deep perennial root system enables it to regrow after appropriate grazing even in times of low rainfall. Saltbush plantations may also assist the recovery of saline land. We also have planted and encourage natural dispersal of Rhagoida spinescens, another excellent saltbush species which has a succulent red fruit which birds eat and spread.

To date there has been 225 Ha of Old Man Saltbush planted on the property, providing a smorgasbord of different available food when perennial grasses and medics are encouraged to grow between the rows of saltbush. Each plantation helps to create heterogeneity in a landscape that incorporates paddocks, large tree corridors, remnant vegetation and human habitation.
