Spectacular Saltbush…
Old Man Saltbush (Atriplex nummularia) is a native Australian species that was common before European settlement. It is an excellent source of food for livestock, being high in protein and minerals. It has been instrumental in helping to ‘drought proof’ the farm, as its deep perennial root system enables it to regrow after appropriate grazing even in times of severe drought. Saltbush plantations may also assist the recovery of saline land.
To date there has been 170 Ha of Old Man Saltbush planted on the property, providing a smorgasbord of different available food when perennial grasses are encouraged to grow between the rows of saltbush. Each plantation helps to create heterogeneity in a landscape that incorporates paddocks, large tree corridors, remnant vegetation and human habitation.
